Большинство историй связаны с тем, что мужчина похищает тюленью шкуру женщины-селки, и та вынуждена остаться на суше и стать его женой. Чтобы вернуться в море, ей нужно найти свою шкуру.
Есть и другой вариант - селки влюбляется в человека и остается с ним добровольно, но тогда она должна никогда не касаться морской воды. Если же это произойдет, она будет вынуждена остаться в море навечно.
По одной версии, песня "An Maighdean Mhara" рассказывает именно о такой селки. Однажды ее маленькая дочь стала тонуть, мать бросилась за ней в воду и спасла, но тем самым нарушила запрет и теперь должна остаться в море.
По другой версии, селки когда-то потеряла свою тюленью шкуру и осталась жить с людьми. Но теперь она нашла ее, и, хотя она любит своего мужа и дочь, море зовет ее сильнее.
Сама песня представляет собой прощальный диалог между матерью, которая уплывает в море, и дочерью, стоящей на берегу.
